Book Review: Tress of the Emerald Sea
Brandon Sanderson’s Tress of the Emerald Sea is an exciting and refreshing departure from his usual epic fantasy works. Set in the Cosmere (Sanderson’s massive interconnected universe), it tells the story of Tress, a young woman living on a secluded island surrounded by a mysterious sea filled with dangerous spores. When the love of her life, Charlie, is kidnapped, Tress sets out on a daring journey across strange and magical lands to rescue him. What makes this book so fun is the combination of lighthearted adventure with moments of deeper reflection on themes like bravery, self-doubt, and the bonds of friendship. It’s a perfect blend of humor, action, and heart, making it accessible to both long-time Cosmere fans and those just starting to explore Sanderson’s universe.
One of the best parts of Tress of the Emerald Sea is how Sanderson brings the world to life. The setting is vivid and full of imagination, from the strange, spore-filled sea to the otherworldly creatures that Tress encounters. The magic system, based on spores that can change reality, is fascinating and adds a unique twist to the story. While it feels very different from Sanderson’s other works, the book still has his trademark world-building, creating a rich backdrop for Tress’s adventure. The world feels both strange and familiar, pulling you into a setting that is magical yet grounded in its own logic.
At its core, Tress of the Emerald Sea is about growth—both the physical challenges Tress faces and the inner transformation she undergoes. Over the course of the story, Tress evolves from a sheltered, unsure young woman into a confident, capable hero. This transformation is made even more engaging by the quirky, lovable characters she meets along the way, from a wisecracking sentient mushroom to a ragtag crew of misfits. While there are moments where the pacing slows down to allow for character development, the journey is well worth it. With its mix of adventure, humor, and character growth, Tress of the Emerald Sea is an excellent addition to the Cosmere, offering a charming and heartwarming read that stands out in Sanderson’s extensive catalog.
Rating: 4.75 / 5 (Reminds me most of The Princess Bride both thematically and somewhat aesthetically. And, that’s not a bad thing)
