Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How did you start writing?
A: I wrote my first short story when I was six or seven years old. It was about five pages long and entitled "Ben and the Dragon." It was a classic knight in shining armor saves the princess kind of story, something which, to this day, really hasn't lost its appeal to me. The only reason I was writing at that age was I saw my dad doing it too. He wrote (and still writes) international espionage thrillers.
Q: When did you decide to become an author?
A: When I was about eight years old I remember sitting in a bookstore while my dad did a book signing. I pulled out a copy of The Hobbit and started reading there in the aisle. A couple hours later, I knew I wanted to be a writer. Exactly WHAT I would write and the path I would take to get there was entirely uncertain and is still changing.
Q: What talents do you have besides writing?
A: One of the things I'm particularly proud of is my crochet skills. I try to complete a few afghans a year and my favorite stitches right now are Rice Stitch and Basket Weave. I first tried crochet in 2011 while in the delayed entry program for the Air Force and then quickly forgot about it. Years later, around 2016, I picked up a hook and crocheted a scarf when my wife, then girlfriend, got into it. Again, I quickly dropped it. Then, during the pandemic, I picked it up again, this time determined to get good at my stitches. In the last couple of years I've perfected a lot of stitches and am hooked on trying new ones. When I crochet, my heart rate drops and the worries of the day fade away. I highly recommend it if meditation isn't your thing.
